UK Set to Utilize Immobilized Russian Funds to Fund the Ukrainian War Effort
The British government is ready to advance with employing the full worth of seized Russian holdings to bolster Ukraine's military campaign, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has declared.
In a shared declaration, the heads of state of the UK, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany emphasized that this joint measure would increase strain on Moscow's head Vladimir Putin and compel Russia to come to the table.
They further noted that the move would be carried out in close cooperation with the United States.
British sanctions have immobilized more than £25bn of Russian assets since the Russian government initiated its widespread offensive against Ukraine in 2022. However, previously, funds provided to Ukraine using Russia's assets had only been drawn from gains and dividends earned on them.
Sir Keir told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany were in agreement in their desire to advance efforts toward utilizing the complete amount of the immobilized Moscow's national funds to halt hostilities.
He added that additional sanctions over the next period would increase the strain on the Russian government.
This statement comes after EU representatives convened in the Danish capital recently to debate utilizing immobilized Russian holdings for a €140bn loan to the Ukrainian nation.
In the previous month, President Donald Trump called on international partners to take or otherwise use frozen Russia's holdings, as reported by media sources.
The value of frozen Russian holdings in the European Union is estimated to be approximately €211bn.
Leader Zelensky urges the United Kingdom's Sir Keir Starmer to take part in the weapons procurement program
Moscow carried out extensive missile and drone strikes across Ukraine on Friday, causing blackouts in large parts of the capital city, Kyiv, and several other zones.
Two people were fatally injured and no fewer than 20 people were injured in the assault, Ukrainian officials stated.
In a update on an online platform following the strike, Zelensky commented that the strategic strike aimed at civilian and energy infrastructure.
"What is required is not mere statements but firm measures - from the America, the European Union, and the Group of Seven - in supplying anti-aircraft weapons and enforcing sanctions," he wrote.
"Every sanction decision weakens the Russian war effort," Zelensky wrote, in a additional update.
Also on Friday, Zelensky told media outlets he would urge Sir Keir to participate in the Purl scheme, under which Nato countries buy weapons from the US to donate to Ukraine.
While commending the Britain's consistent assistance for Kyiv, he remarked it should demonstrate clearly that it would engage in the system, as well as impose additional sanctions on Moscow.
