The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
