An Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book lodging when I arrived, yet once I got there, a large conference was in town and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught a bus into town and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, believing I might spend the evening in a place operating 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing an interview the next day, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed out of place since a female student spotted me wandering around the city center and wondered whether I needed help. I shared my situation and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering some food: one filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to sleep.
Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she accepted as a woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – but still deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not attending that university, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has repaid her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
